The Detroit Pistons re-sign Will Bynum

The Pistons have re-signed 27-year old SG/PG Will Bynum to a 3-year, $9.75 million dollar deal. Bynum played in 63 games (20 starts) for the Pistons last season and he averaged 26.5 minutes, 10.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. He has now played in 135 games (21 starts) in his three years in the NBA and he has averaged 19.5 minutes, 8.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Bynum is instant offense off the bench for the Pistons and it was smart of the Pistons to re-sign him.

The Detroit Pistons re-sign Ben Wallace

The Pistons have re-signed 25-year old PF/C Ben Wallace to a new 2-year deal. Wallace played in 69 games (67 starts) for the Pistons last season and he averaged 28.6 minutes, 5.5 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocked shots per game. He has now played in 972 games (852 starts) in his NBA career and he is averaging 30.7 minutes, 6.2 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.1 blocked shots per game. Wallace is #34 all-time in the NBA in rebounds (9,863), #59 in steals (1,268) and #16 in blocked shots (2,032) and he will likely move up quite a bit as long as he stays healthy. This was a good move for the Pistons as Big Ben proved last season that he still has something left.

The Pistons are hoarding young talent as Rodney Stuckey, Jonas Jerebko, Austin Daye, Greg Monroe and Terrico White form a good start to the future. The future could be at hand if the Pistons trade Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton this summer. I don’t see the Pistons being players in free agency but they would likely want to re-sign restricted free agent Will Bynum who really played well for them last season. The Pistons are getting close to transitioning into a rebuilding mode but it can’t really start until Prince and Hamilton are playing for new teams.

The Detroit Pistons select Terrico White in the second round

The Pistons have selected 20-year old SG Terrico White with the 36th overall pick of the NBA Draft. White played in 35 games (34 starts) at Mississippi last season and he averaged 15.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. He played in 66 games (55 starts) in his college career and he averaged 14.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Pistons’ GM Joe Dumars once again found great value in the second round as many experts had White going in the first round.

The Detroit Pistons pick Greg Monroe in the first round

The Pistons have selected PF/C Greg Monroe with the 7th overall pick of the NBA Draft. Monroe played in 34 games (all starts) for Georgetown last season and he averaged 16.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.5 blocked shots per game. He played in 65 games (all starts) in his two years at G-Town and he averaged 14.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocked shots per game. Monroe is a legit big man at 6′11″, 253 pounds and he can fill up the stat sheet. Look for Monroe to possibly get a look at center for the Pistons this season. This was a great pick as Monroe is a good all around basketball player.

The Detroit Pistons are hoping things fall right for them tomorrow night

The Pistons are well set at guard heading into the 2010-11 season so look for them to target more big guys in tomorrow’s night’s NBA Draft. The Pistons hold the #7 and the #36 overall picks in the draft. The Pistons hope the DeMarcus Cousins falls to them in the first round and it could happen. But more than likely the Pistons will be deciding between C Cole Adrich and PF Ed Davis. I would think that the Pistons would take Aldrich over Davis because he is a legit center which is a big need of the Pistons. Whoever the Pistons get in the first round they hope he’s ready to play big minutes in 2010-11.

Richard Hamilton proved last season that he still has some game left for the Detroit Pistons

32-year old SG Richard Hamilton proved last season that he still has something left as he pushed Ben Gordon to the bench when he returned from injury. Hamilton played in 46 games (all starts) for the Pistons last season and he averaged 33.7 minutes, 18.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. He has now played 8 years with the Pistons appearing in 576 games (560 starts) in which he has averaged 35.0 minutes, 18.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. Hamilton is now #10 all-time in Pistons’ history in games played (576), #8 in assists (2,248) and #6 in points scored (10,805). The Pistons will be tempted to trade Hamilton this summer but they should resist unless they get a really good return for him.

Chris Wilcox exercises his player option for the 2010-11 season for the Detroit Pistons

27-year old power forward Chris Wilcox has exercised his player option for the 2010-11 season. He played in 34 games (10 starts) for the Pistons last year and he averaged 13.0 minutes, 4.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. Wilcox has now played in 482 games (221 starts) in his NBA career and he is averaging 21.1 minutes, 9.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game. The Pistons probably would have liked Wilcox to leave as a free agent but at the same time he’ll likely get more P.T. than he got last season.

The Detroit Pistons will have a couple decisions to make on free agents this summer

It will be interesting to see what the Pistons do with their four free agents this summer. Will Bynum is a restricted free agent and he might get a nice offer on the open market. It will be interesting to see if the Pistons ante up for Bynum or let him walk away. Personally I think they should keep him if the price is reasonable. Backup forward Chris Wilcox has a player option for 2010-11 and I tend to think he will pick it up because there are a lot of power forwards better than him in the free agent market. Ben Wallace will likely want to come back if the Pistons will have him and he appears to have something left in the gas tank based on how he played last year. The Pistons should just say no to Kwame Brown even if he offers to play for the league minimum.
